Is 1200 a good chess rating for a 14 year old?
Beginners are welcome, 1300 is more than enough. The best 16 year olds are at least master strength already. A competitive rating for a national under 16 tourney would be around class A to expert, lets say 1700-2100. You're not going to win the whole thing but you'll be in the pack somewhere.

a person who is rated 1200 is a little above a beginner level who has basic knowledge of principles in chess(control the center, get your king castled, basic tactics etc.). the main difference between a 1200 and someone who is stronger(say like a person who is 1400 on chess.com) is mainly tactical vision.
